MICHAEL Hutchence had planned on leaving lover Paula Yates just days before his sudden death, it has been revealed.
During an exclusive interview with Channel 7’s Sunday Night, INXS member Kirk Pengilly said Hutchence had told him that he wanted to split up with Yates — a secret he kept to himself for 16 years.
“What can I say? That’s what he told me,” Pengilly revealed, adding it was a long time ago and he didn’t like to dwell on it.
The confession formed part of the highly-billed interview where the five surviving band members spoke of their pain at losing the popular frontman and how they still grieve for him.
Tim Farriss and Kirk Pengilly took reporter Rahni Sadler back to the Farriss brothers’ family home where the band formed and played for the very first time.
The exclusive vision from INXS manager Chris Murphy’s private archives featured on the program INXS: In Their Own Words, alongside the Farriss brothers Tim, Jon and Andrew, as well as Garry Gary Beers and Pengilly.

The interview touched on everything from when Michael met Kylie to his meeting Paula Yates, the birth of their daughter Tiger and the fractured relationship the band experienced towards the end.
First impressions:
Hutchence came across to the other band members as shy, pimply and not like the other kids in school.
“Michael never wanted to be a singer and was more interested in poetry,” Pengilly said.
The song that almost broke the band:
Original Sin caused such a backlash in America’s bible belt that some record companies and stations refused to play it, leaving the band desperate for another hit and “very close to death”. Fortunately the release of What you Need saved them and placated their US fans.
On Kylie:
The band were all shocked when Hutchence began dating the former Neighbours star, with one revealing she was “a little bit Charlene off the camera” and that Michael definitely corrupted her.
The fact that they didn’t see each other often enough was one of the reasons given for the relationship failing.
On Paula:
When Hutchence met Paula Yates the chemistry was instant.
The couple’s affair began half an hour after their first meeting with “Paula on a mission to get Michael”.

On Tiger Lily:
Guitarist Tim Farriss told the program Hutchence would have “hated” his daughter Tiger Lily being raised by Yates’ ex Sir Bob Geldof.
“Michael hated Bob in the end so much, to think that he would end up as the sole parent of Tiger Lily would have been the most horrific thing he could have imagined. But luckily for Tiger she had Bob at the end,” he said.
The band also reveal while they haven’t maintained a relationship with Tiger, they would love to meet her “when the time is right ... with open arms.”
Biggest regret:
Tim Farriss said one night Hutchence took a swing at him and the pair never got to clear the air over the incident.
The moment Hutchence changed:
After Hutchence was king hit while out in Denmark with supermodel Helena Christensen in 1992, the singer lost his taste and smell. The band members said this left him devastated because he liked “to try everything” and loved food and fine wine.
When he lost those sensations the band said he began to change for the worse.
On his death:
All band members were shocked and unable to explain why he would have killed himself when he had a little baby he loved and lived for.
Yates said in earlier interview that she found it hard to believe Hutchence would have killed himself.
“He could have done anything at any time. The one thing he wouldn’t have done is just left us.”
The band told the programme he seemed fine the last time they saw him and were left reeling after his death.
“I went into the bathroom and started hyperventilating,” Tim Farriss said.
When Andrew Farriss was asked if he though the singer had indeed taken his own life, he said he still didn’t really know what to think.
“There is a hint there,” he said.
“I find it hard to live with the thought that it happened, so you try to think of other things. But to be honest there really isn’t anything else that makes any sense to me. So you just have to leave it at that.”
